Built-up roofing is one of the oldest and most reliable ways of installing a new roof. They have been in use in the U.S. for more than 100 years. It was first known as composition roofing and started in the 1840s. Today they are commonly referred to as the acronym BUR
There are three basic components of a BUR (1) the waterproofing component, (2) the reinforcing component, and (3) the surfacing component which protects the other two components from the elements.
The materials used to construct a built-up roof are susceptible to both sun and water damage. Prolonged exposure to these elements can cause small cracks to form in the surface, which will eventually cause the roof to fail.
